What is Solano Youth Theatre’s mission?

SYT is the award-winning youth theatre arm of the Solano College theatre program. Our mission is “to inspire, nurture, challenge, amaze, educate, and empower young theatre artists via top-quality performing experiences.” With our programs, we seek to stimulate, celebrate, and enhance young actors’ and audiences’ understanding of themselves and others through the shared magic of live theatre.

What ages does SYT serve?

We serve all students but our programs are geared for kids in grades 1 through 12 (ages 6 through 19)

What shows and workshops are being offered in my area?

SYT programs rehearse throughout Solano County in various locations in Vacaville, Suisun/Fairfield, and Vallejo/Benicia. Not every program is offered in every city. Please see the current “Info at a Glance” fact sheets for current listings. Click here for more information.

What’s the schedule like?

The calendar/schedule varies by project:

  • Skill-Building Workshops generally meet twice a week for about 12 weeks.
  • Mainstage Musicals (geared for Grades 5-12) rehearse three times a week for 12-14 weeks, though generally only leads are needed at every rehearsal.
  • Munchkin Theatre Shows (geared for Grades 1-4) meet twice a week for 8-10 weeks.
  • Teen Plays (geared for Grades 7-12) meet three times a week for 10-12 weeks, though generally only leads are needed at every rehearsal.
  • The Teen Touring Company (Grades 7-12 by audition) meets once a week for the entire semester.

Please see the current “Info at a Glance” fact sheets for current listings. Click here for more information.

Does a child need to have acting/singing/dancing experience to participate?

Absolutely not! We do our best to provide a safe yet exciting experience for beginning students, as well as a healthy challenge and more advanced training for "seasoned veterans."

Are there auditions to get in?

If the description says “BY AUDITION,” then your enrollment in that workshop or show will be contingent on a successful audition. The vast majority of our shows and workshops, however, do NOT have auditions to get in; we accept all interested applicants up to our enrollment limits, regardless of previous training or experience. As long as you can attend rehearsal faithfully and you’re willing to learn, we’ll teach you everything you need to know!

How do you cast the parts in the shows?

Once rehearsals begin, friendly, supportive "in-house" auditions are held to determine casting. We pride ourselves on our ability to find developmentally appropriate and rewarding roles for all of our young performers. Our “Casting Philosophy and Policies” document guides our casting process.

How much does it cost?

We are affiliated with Solano Community College and as such we enroll all of our students.  They receive one to three  units of college credit for every class or show in which they participate. The cost for enrollment is $13.50.
The production fee starts at either $250 for a munchkin production or $275 for a mainstage musical.  If there is a family member or members willing to put in at least 12 hours of volunteer time then we knock off $100.  The 12 hour commitment is per family, not per student, so if you enroll more than 1 child each get the discount but only 12 hours are needed to fulfill the commitment.  There are also discounts for early registration or attending the Registration Fair and there is also a sibling discount for families enrolling more than one student.

Do you offer financial assistance or discounts?

We have a limited number of need based scholarships that we award each semester.  These are based on the family’s income and the number of people in the household.  PDFDownload the application here.

We also offer the option of a payment plan.  Families pay $25 down and the remaining balance is spread out over the next three months. PDFDownload the application here.
